New Scientist 6 February, 2017 by Andy Coghlan. Research conducted at University College London by Lion Shahab’s team found that in comparison to smokers, former smokers who had been vaping exclusively for a minimum period of six months or more, had very low levels of some of the worst carcinogens found in tobacco smoke.

Reviewing urine and saliva samples from 181 people to screen for chemicals, the researchers found that using e-cigs alone resulted in very low exposure to toxins and carcinogens. The researchers said the findings provided strong reassurance that vaping is safer than smoking.

The New Scientist article stated that Linda Bauld University of Stirling, UK said “This paper adds to the body of evidence that e-cigarette use is less harmful than smoking”. Linda Bauld is a cancer prevention adviser to Cancer Research UK, the body which funded the study.
